When Stanley Kubrick adapted 2001: A Space Odyssey in 1968, the music and sound design of the Alien and Star Trek series helped set the tone of the space exploration film. The music was created by a composer named John Powell for the Scottish band Tangerine Dream, creating the science fiction sounds for the movie. 20th Century Fox released a compilation album in 1970 with the same name. The album includes songs from the 1968 movie, and the band members include the album’s novelist, director, and narrator, Arthur C. Clarke “with an introduction by Dr. Carl Sagan.” The LP compilations and single editions were exclusive in the US. The LP was released in UK in 1971 in different versions as well. The LP’s sleeve design was done by Ralph Peer, who’s also responsible for the design of the classic “Swan Song” album cover.
In the mid-’90s, the then-decrepit Hudson River Institute was approached by a branch of the World Bank to create a Visual Arts Archive. Their 1950s and 1960s film material largely came from the Washington University in St. Louis’ Iverson Museum of Art. Into this collection, Hudson River Institute created a digital repository. The repository contains the film elements of 36 PBS documentaries from the 1960s, but after that, it’s a mixed bag of materials, including old film noir and westerns. d2c66b5586
