Notes: - The V7.1.8.2 interim fix of the IBM Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive Client, which is used as the Data Protection for VMware data mover, includes VMware VDDK 6.5.2EP1. This interim fix version of the Backup-Archive Client is also is included as a convenience in the 7.1.8.1 Data Protection for VMware installation package. For VDDK 6.5.2EP1 Release Notes see: Virtual Disk Development Kit 6.5.2 EP1 Release Notes - The V7.1.8.4 interim fix of the IBM Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive Client, which is used as the Data Protection for VMware data mover, includes VMware VDDK 6.7EP1. For VDDK 6.7EP1 Release Notes see: Virtual Disk Development Kit 6.7 EP1 Release Notes - The V7.1.8.5 interim fix of the IBM Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive Client, which is used as the Data Protection for VMware data mover, includes VMware VDDK 6.7.1. For VDDK 6.7.1 Release Notes see: Virtual Disk Development Kit 6.7.1 - The V7.1.8.6 interim fix of the IBM Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive Client, which is used as the Data Protection for VMware data mover, includes VMware VDDK 6.7.2. For VDDK 6.7.2 Release Notes see: Virtual Disk Development Kit 6.7.2 - The V7.1.8.
Virtual disks are disk images you can use in a virtual machine. A virtual disk is compatible with VMware virtual machine formats that are based on the Disk Virtualization API (DVA). Virtual machine formats that are based on DVA are:
To specify the file name for the virtual disk, use the name attribute. The name attribute's value should contain the filename in the format disk_image_file_name. For example, consider a file name my_virtual_machine.
VDDK does not support ESXi virtual machine formats that are based on the Virtual Disk Interface (VDI). The VDI does not have a header file, so the data files that you create in the VDI format are not supported by the VDDK.
Additionally, it is possible to specify a password when mounting the virtual machine disk. If a password is not specified when mounting the virtual machine disk, the mount operation will succeed without prompting for a password. However, when the mount operation is successful, a password is required to mount the disk from the virtual machine setup dialog box. The password can either be entered as a previously assigned password or a randomly generated password.
In addition to the requirements above, when using either VMware Fusion or VMware Workstation and the Data Mover / IBM Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive Client, the backed up virtual machine disk must be mounted as a read-write volume. The virtual machine must also be powered on in order to perform restore operations.
The Data Mover function for off-host block level incremental backups is enabled by the installation of the IBM Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive Client 7.1.8, and later maintenance levels. The VMware Virtual Disk Development Kit (VDDK) version 6.5.1 runtime files are used for backing up virtual machines by the Data Mover.
