Salaakhen: A Tale of Revenge and Justice
Salaakhen is a 1998 Hindi-language action film directed by Guddu Dhanoa and starring Sunny Deol and Raveena Tandon in pivotal roles. The film revolves around the story of Vishal Agnihotri, a young man who takes the law into his own hands to avenge the death of his father, an honest school teacher who was forced to commit suicide after testifying against a powerful and corrupt politician's son in a rape and murder case.
The film begins with a flashback, where Vishal (Sunny Deol) is on trial for killing four people, including his own lawyer. He reveals that he did so because they were all involved in the conspiracy that led to his father's death. He then narrates his story to an inquiry committee, which takes us back to the events that triggered his quest for justice.
Vishal's father, Sachidanand Agnihotri (Anupam Kher), was a respected teacher who worked in various schools. He was transferred to a government school in Worli, where he witnessed the brutal rape and murder of a young woman by Nagesh (Rammi Dhillon), the son of Jaspal Rana (Amrish Puri), a wealthy and influential politician. Sachidanand decided to testify against Nagesh in court, despite the threats and warnings from Jaspal Rana and his henchmen. He also faced pressure from his wife Gayetri (Farida Jalal) and son Vishal, who feared for his safety.
In court, Sachidanand was cross-examined by Advocate Ashok Pradhan (Mohan Joshi), who was hired by Jaspal Rana to defend Nagesh. Pradhan twisted Sachidanand's words and made him look like a liar and a fraud. He also presented false witnesses and evidence to discredit Sachidanand's testimony. Sachidanand was humiliated and harassed by Pradhan and the corrupt police officer ACP Kamble (Mahavir Shah), who was also on Jaspal Rana's payroll. Unable to bear the injustice and torture, Sachidanand shot himself in the courtroom.
Vishal, who was arrested for assaulting some policemen who tried to stop him from reaching his father, escaped from prison and vowed to take revenge on those who were responsible for his father's death. He kidnapped Nagesh and tortured him until he confessed his crime. He then killed Pradhan and Kamble in front of Nagesh, before killing him too. He finally tracked down Jaspal Rana and killed him as well.
The film ends with Vishal being sentenced to life imprisonment for his crimes. He tells the judge that he did what he had to do because the system failed him and his father. He also urges the judge not to appoint people like Jaspal Rana as ministers, so that people like him would not have to take the law into their own hands.
Salaakhen was released on 24 April 1998 and received mixed reviews from critics and audiences. The film was praised for its action sequences and Sunny Deol's performance, but criticized for its weak plot and direction. The film was also compared unfavorably to Dhanoa's previous film Ziddi (1997), which had a similar theme of revenge. The film was a moderate success at the box office, earning â21.58 crore against a budget of â9 crore.
The film also featured Manisha Koirala in a special appearance as a dancer in the song \"Dhak Dhak\". The music of the film was composed by Dilip Sen-Sameer Sen and the lyrics were written by Sameer. The soundtrack included songs like \"Jab Dil Dhadakta Hai\", \"Tera Naam Lene Ki\" and \"Kuch Tum Bolo Kuch Hum Bole\".
Salaakhen is a film that showcases Sunny Deol's action hero image and his ability to deliver powerful dialogues. It is also a film that highlights the issue of corruption and injustice in society and how it affects the common man. aa16f39245
