Over twenty-five years after the film's release, the British critic Tony Rayns summed it up tersely in a magazine article with the words, \"Too much opera, not enough phantom\" - a judgment with which many would agree.
Pit violinist Claudin hopelessly loves rising operatic soprano Christine Dubois (as do baritone Anatole and police inspector Raoul) and secretly aids her career. But Claudin loses both his touch and his job, murders a rascally music publisher in a fit of madness, and has his face etched with acid. Soon, mysterious crimes plague the Paris Opera House, blamed on a legendary \"phantom\".
The phantom's interest in Christine's singing career is kept almost completely behind the scenes this time - an odd choice, but one I feel works here. And the musical numbers are spectacular, putting this right behind the Schumacher one and Phantom of the Paradise. I did catch the ALW when I was fifteen, and it was one of my most memorable experiences.
At L'Opéra Populaire, down deep within its old torture chambers and sewers, lies a secret long since buried and believed to be dead. Judith Hopps, an aspiring singer, becomes the object of affection of an unseen mysterious voice. The ghost - the Phantom of the Opera - her Angel of Music and the holder of a secret conspiracy that once brought \"death\" to the vengeful phantom himself.
Eighteen years after Lon Chaney frightened audiences with his beastly phantom, director Arthur Lubin brought Phantom of the opera to the screen from a different angle. We are given a lengthy origin story of this phantom, a violinist in the Paris Opera named Erique Claudin played by the great Claude Rains. Erique is a man who garners no great deal of respect from his peers, but he is a passionate man. He is in love with Christine Dubois (Susanna Foster), an up and coming singer in the opera house. He also has a concerto he would like to have played in an opera. When he hands over his concerto to the maestro, he is rejected, only to hear his music being played later, behind closed doors. This sends Erique into a blind rage, and in a confrontation acid is thrown into his face. He flees the room, never to be seen again in his current form.
From here, the story takes its familiar footing. Erique becomes the phantom, a mysterious figure haunting the opera house causing all sorts of chaos. He manipulates the cast of an upcoming Opera so that Christine may get her starring role. He also, in the most famous scene of both pictures, sabotages the opening night of an opera by cutting the chandelier loose from the ceiling. It falls and kills several audience members. Advancements in technology between the two films make this chandelier sequence tenser and ultimately more believable.
Claude Rains was a staple of Universal horrors at this point, having starred in both The Invisible Man and The Wolf Man before taking over as the phantom. This is a meatier role, where he is the center of the action. He was most certainly the focus of The Invisible Man, but he was unseen until the end. Rains has a burning intensity and a voice that outweighs his small stature as Claudin. The 1943 version of Phantom of the Opera will forever be mentioned second to the Chaney classic; however, there are certain elements that work better here than they did in 1925.
One of the most popular stories of all time, Gaston Leroux's Phantom of the Opera is the legendary horror tale starring Claude Rains as the masked phantom of the Paris Opera House. Following a tragic accident that leaves him disfigured, crazed composer Erique Claudin transforms into a masked phantom who schemes to make beautiful young soprano Christine Dubois (Susanna Foster) the star of the opera and wreak revenge on those who stole his music. A heroic baritone (Nelson Eddy) tries to win the affections of Christine as he tracks down the disfigured \"monster\" who has begun murdering those who resist his mad demands. Inspired by the original 1925 silent version, this lavish Technicolor production remains one of the most unforgettable adaptations ever to be filmed.
Recreate the famous acid burn effect featured in the 1943 classic, The Phantom of the Opera, starring Claude Rains. This tutorial uses silicone (3rd Degree) to create the acid scarring. This is an extremely useful technique that can be used to create a variety of characters. Love is one of the major themes of this adaptation. Like other adaptations and the novel, the phantom is driven by his love of Christine to help her and eventually kidnap her. Claudin pays for her vocal lessons, even though he cannot afford it. He is also driven to madness because of his love. However, it is not his love for Christine that kills him like in the book. The love the other suitors had for Christine is what potentially kills him.
Jealousy is not as apparent with this phantom unlike previous ones. He is constantly giving Christine gifts and attempting to impress her. A hint of jealously appears when he kidnaps Christine. He kidnaps her because he wants to keep her to himself and away from the other two men. His desire to be with her fuels his kidnapping and as a result shows that
Much like previous adaptations and the original text, this film exhibits a haunted feel. In previous adaptation and the original text, the entire film is haunted by the phantom. Because this film gives the phantom an origin story, the \"hauntedness\" of the house and the building loses it effect. The novel and previous silent film are centered around an opera house haunted by a phantom that controls most of the decisions by force. Here, the phantom only haunts Biancarolli. The haunting simply becomes a murder. It presents Claudin as more of a stalker instead of a phantom.
This film introduces a new sense of a female identity. Christine is an independent woman. Even though she fancies Raoul and Anatole, she has a career and can support herself. This is different from the femininity of the novel and the previous adaptation. Christine is enchanted by the Phantom and looses control over herself. Raoul is the one who saves her from the phantom. It is very much the same in this film with the rescue, however, Christine must make the decision between a housewife and a working girl. At the end of the film, Christine chooses her career. She toys with the emotions of the men and is not ready to become the housewife. It is unlike previous adaptations, where Christine chooses to marry Raoul. Christine appears to be in control of her life, and at the end chooses her career.
This is also the first American film adaptation which recognizes an origin story for the Phantom. In the Chinese remake of the 1925 adaptation, Midnight Song (1937), the phantom is given an origin story based in war and star-crossed love. However,Claudin is a secret admirer and man who snaps. His love for Christine spans well before he became the Phantom of the Paris Opera House. The origin story humanizes the phantom and makes him less terrifying.
The phantom is also disfigured. In the novel and the previous 1925 adaptation, the phantom has little to no facial feature and exemplifies a ghost like creature. However, Claudin is disfigured because of a chemical burn. It only covers a side of his face and can easily be hidden.
In this film adaptation, the phantom composes an opera. This is one of the first adaptations to have the phantom compose a piece instead of just playing the violin. This will be used in future adaptations. This is also the first adaptation where the phantom points out a lake in his underground cavern. It is one of the first adaptations to have a lake, which will pop up in future adaptations. 59ce067264
