Co-op makes adventuring significantly more enjoyable as well, if only for the ridiculous accidental deaths and miscasts that are only possible with two or more blundering wizards in tow. Magicka 2 supports both local and online coop with up to four players. Friendly fire is always enabled, so you can easily immolate friends as easily as you can heal them.

When playing online, any magicks that the host player has learned on his character is automatically made available to all connecting clients (including magicks that require DLCs even if the connecting clients do not own the DLC).

Magicka 2 gets most of its good will for its co-op, which is why controllers for couch play are sort of preferred, though you can play online, and in parties of any make up (two local, one online, and so on). While playing co-op can make the worst game fun, Magicka 2 is definitely improved with and seems designed around having friends to revive you and to separate enemies whose AI encourages them to clump in writhing, obscuring masses.

Playing alone, or with up to three friends (both online and locally) Magicka 2 will take you across a series of fantasy vistas, dispatching enemies using a powerful codex of spells. Although there is only a sprinkling of light RPG elements, Magicka 2 still evokes the feeling of a dungeon crawler with its top down camera and combat-heavy level design.

As a result, Magicka 2 can be an extremely tough singleplayer experience. Throw in one or two controllers, however, and the true nature of this sequel comes to light. Marching from level to level will become slightly easier, given the small pool of healing and revival spells on-hand. Then again, if you happen to be playing with clumsy mates (or simply online randoms) things can really start to fall apart in ways that are both fun and infuriating. The frenetic pace of Magicka 2, combined with the range of arc and area damage spells, means that friendly fire is an inevitability with wizards blowing up left, right, and centre.

Fight Party is a splitscreen/online multiplayer fighting game that has combos, weapons and throwable hazards to defeat your enemies. Be the last one standing in the maps to offer, each having their unique theme and style that makes different strategies and fights to occur.

Ahh nice. Another game to co-op with my son, assuming the co-op is both online and offline. This looks cool, and will mix up the other two isometric titles we're playing, which are Helldivers and Dead Nation Apocalypse, which are both guns-n-grits, rather than spells and craziness.

Magicka 2 is very nearly a more-of-the-same sequel, so it shouldn't be too surprising that most of these problems remain. The campaign's shorter this time, but it can still feel like a masochistic grind if you're playing solo, and while co-op is as hilarious as it ever was (Magicka is proof positive that co-op games should almost always include friendly fire - and then combine it with actual fire) it's still pretty simple stuff. A silly narrative interspersed with wave after wave of foes and the odd boss. Horde-type challenges, trials and a neat artifact system that allows you to add modifiers to make the game harder or just stranger on subsequent playthroughs. All of this is enriched by local and online co-op, and it takes place against familiarly bucolic fantasy landscapes - a bit icier and cavier this time, perhaps - that feel as flimsy and lifeless as a Lord of the Rings-themed coconut shy. The approach to magic still shines - and it still hasn't found the game that will truly do it justice.

Best of all, Magicka 2 supports gamepads and local co-op. So, you and your friends can \"accidentally\" kill each other while all in the same room. Or mix and match between online and local friends. If nothing else, Magicka is all about mixing up different components to see what will happen. The only potential downsides to local co-op is that everyone will be limited to using items that the host has unlocked. Plus, casting spells with a gamepad is a radically different experience from using a mouse and keyboard.
