The next day, Treasure Island appears in the distance. Jim steals a rowboat and quickly rows there himself, with Silver and some men going after him. While hiding from them, he meets Ben Gunn, a former member of Flint's crew. He reveals that he and the rest of Flint's men were the ones who killed Flint after they decided to betray him for the treasure. Three years later, Ben led the other men on a search for Flint's treasure, but they found nothing and the crew left him marooned on the island. He agrees to help Jim and his friends find the treasure.
When Jim, Horatio and Ben arrive at the island, a seagull flies away with the treasure and they immediately go to look for it. Ben suggests that they read the big brass plate over the island's beach, and they determine that this treasure must be the one owned by John Flint. They go past a huge tree with a plaque and decide to climb it: Jim pulls a ladder away. However, they discover that someone has been on the island already, because the plaque bore the name "Ben Gunn", which there is no water and dirt near.
Jim and Horatio go into the island with Horatio's grandfather, a carpenter named Joseph Hands. At nightfall, his grandfather lights a fire and they eat a meal and take shelter in the caretaker's house.
