Then I found a way to convert the.ttf to.otf, and it worked perfectly. It's the first time I've used the.ttf font, and apparently it can be used for any.ttf, as long as the first byte is set to the 4-bit sequence.
The only thing I was missing Arial (from Open Office) and looked like a bunch of garbage. I then opened my font collection and ran the Open Type installer. Once installed, it has been working fine. Thanks for your help.
I'll have a look. By the way, what are you opening in illustrator? Do you mean that you are selecting a text frame and then choosing the font? If so, hold down the cmd button whilst selecting a text frame to see the font select dialog box. If you are using Mac, you can hold down the option key and click to get the same dialog as on Windows.
