The study of blood flow dynamics in the aorta and other large arteries is important in understanding the basic mechanisms by which blood vessels constrict and dilate. This study prepared a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model to simulate the turbulent blood flow with the assumption of laminar flow, and used the model to validate a turbulent flow model. The simulation of the CFD model was performed by Fluent 6.3 (ANSYS, Inc.), an in-house CFD software developed by Cornell University. The CFD model was validated with previous experimental data of blood flow through a curved tube with various curvatures. The results of the CFD model showed close agreement with the experimental data obtained using a wind tunnel-based method. The validation of the CFD model with experimental data suggested that the developed CFD model can be effective in simulating blood flow in curved tubes that deviate from the straight tubes by using discrete elements. The results also showed that the dynamic pressure distribution of the curved tube was significantly different from that of the straight tube with the same diameter. This study was expected to be a valuable tool in the development of CFD models to analyze blood flow and hemodynamic forces in curved tubes, and could be used as a systematic approach to conduct such studies with various curved geometries.

The 3D imaging methods include medical imaging such as X-ray, CT, and MRI, imaging techniques of non-invasive and invasive uses such as optical imaging and ultrasound, and cryotechnology, and physical techniques such as MRI, 3D printing, and ultrasound.
